TODAY IS THE U.S. CONSTITUTION’S 234TH ANNIVERSARY
Third President of the United States Thomas Jefferson in a letter to David Hartley, 1787: “I have no fear that the result of our experiment will be that men may be trusted to govern themselves without a master.”
Third President of the United States Thomas Jefferson to William C. Jarvis, 1820 : “I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves ; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power.”
